Chiropractic is based on the nervous system. The muscles, and organs systems of the body take direction from the boss, the brain via the nervous system. Because of the location of the nervous system in relationship to the bones of the skeletal frame, the nerves travels through the bony vertebrae and stem off the spinal column at separate levels. Therefore, due to our natural positioning, subluxations or vertebral misalignments affect the function of the nerve system. Chiropractic treats with spinal manipulation, which involves applying a manual controlled force into the joints that have become restricted by tissue injury with the purpose of restoring the normal function of the nervous system, the joint mobility, alleviating related pain & tightness, and allowing tissues to heal ( History of Chiropractic Care, ACA, Anne Asher).

Ancient cave drawings have been found illustrating the neck adjustment. More recently in 1895 Daniel David Palmer adjusted a man that was deaf in one ear, and his hearing was instantly restored.

Today, research continues into chiropractic and the world benefits from its treatment.

Chiropractic deals with reduction and correction of subluxations ( spinal vertebral misalignments), in 1897 the term described the “stack feeling”, a condition characterized by reducing range of motion, and pressure on nerves. This impairs a persons functions by reducing neurological output and control.

This gentle, natural approach to nervous system function, Chiropractic, is practiced around the world. When the nervous system works uninterrupted, organ system functions improve, joint and muscle pain is reduced.

Is Chiropractic safe for neonates, infants, toddlers and children?

Yes, the manipulation techniques used in this office are safe. They are low force, gentle specific, and controlled. Acknowledging that the spinal bones and structures are still developing starting with the neck ( cervical spine) and proceeding down the upper to midback ( thoracic spine) to the low back ( lumbar spine ) and sacrum, adjustments techniques for these ages differ greatly from that of the adult spine.

The method of adjusting an infant is safe, and it is called “Touch and Hold” technique for ages up to 12 weeks. This technique is similar to the pressure you would use to test a tomato for ripeness. Development of bony and ligamentous structures occur during this time. The technique used for children is tailored to their age and size. By age 7 the child can receive even low back (lumbar) rotatary technique adjustments.

It is important that children get assessed all along their development and receive the appropriate treatment to correct imbalances in their growth as they arise. It is easy and non painful for an infant or child to receive adjustments as the spine and nervous system are very flexible and need the proper guidance to grow the correct way, before imbalances become permanent in their spine, such as scoliosis.

Neurological Signals nerve intererence

What is Nerve Interference?

Normally your brain works by sending messages or commands out via your nerves and receives information from your nerves

Nerve interference is called a SUBLUXATION. Subluxations in baby's posture can occur due to birth trauma, dressing baby in clothes, bassinets, and car seats. Nerve impulses or messages that are sent between the baby’s brain and body are distorted into a mis-message.

When vital neurological signals are compromised by compression of the head during birth or fetal positioning, your infants health is at risk for the essential and basic neurological controls of breathing, and swallowing. Only chiropractic assessment can determine if there are subluxations. Only chiropractic treatment can relieve the nervous system. Impaired nerve supply can also affect the middle ears, and eustachian tubes making them prone to fluid retention and infections.

Why do Children need Chiropractic?

Birth can be traumatic, neck and shoulder imbalances can arise from the way we are delivered. Hip dysplasia should be screened for before 6 months of age, this can occur from birth and development of the infant. Compression of the head and neck at birth can cause vagus nerve damage and dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, or phrenic nerve injury, where the infant has in drawing of air around the diaphragm, with lots of nasal noises, and can’t get breath into their lungs well.

Parents Guide: What to look for in your child’s development

As your child grows they can grow unevenly. Scoliosis is the sideways curve of the spine which can be caused by unequal growth from one side to the other. Scoliosis can lead to compromised heart and lung function. It is extremely important to identify if there is scoliosis in your child’s developing spine. Early detection is a key to chiropractic correction and better prognosis. Treatment consists of specific spinal adjustments, combined with special exercises. When identified early enough the chiropractor will have excellent success with cases of scoliosis. Don’t wait until your child complains of pain, by then it could be too late, and surgical procedures of metal rods anchored to your child’s spine may be necessary. Dr. Young knows when to refer these cases, but if caught early enough, we can help.

As a child progresses look out for Developmental Femoral Anteversion, which is knock knees, and can be avoided with stopping “W” sitting as the child develops.

Watch out for meningitis in children under 2 years of age. There is so much space in the nervous tissue of the young childs spine for their potential development, that meningitis can appear without the typical symptoms that an adult would demonstrate and therefore can go undiagnosed and untreated. If an adult has a stiff neck, headaches, fever and flu like symptoms you need to check for meningitis. Meningitis can mimic a musculoskeletal complaint. A test for meningitis infection in older children and adults, is to try to flex their head forward on their neck. In cases of meningitis, they cannot bend it. Unfortunately, in babies and children under 2 there is so much space in the nervous system that even if there is an inflammatory infection of the meninges, that they could still be able to bend their neck. In these cases with history presenting an immediate referral to your MD or emergency room would be necessary to check for this life threatening infection.

Colic in infants is alleviated with chiropractic treatments. If colic is left untreated it is usually exchanged for an equally irritating behaviour in toddlers, such as temper tantrums, feeding problems, and sleeping difficulty. Children can not communicate how they feel, except through these methods of discontent, so read the signs and get your child examined by an experienced chiropractor. Subluxations happen, as children grow and explore the world around them, with falls and twists learning to walk and climb.

Subluxations can also affect the child’s immune system. A subluxated nervous system is compromised and weakens the stomach, lungs, nose, ears, and throat from fighting off viruses, and other germs. Many children whom receive chiropractic treatments have improved immune systems, get sick less often and seem healthier than other children.

Puberty brings expected hormonal changes, and “growing pains”, scoliosis or unequal growth of the spine occurs most rapidly in adolescence. Uneven leg length, unbalanced hips, shoulders and other spinal distortions will go unnoticed as the child becomes more independent, unless they get assessed by an experienced chiropractor. These growing pains are common, but not normal, and lead to expensive hard to fix problems later in life.

Chiropractic treatments are safe, enjoyable, and cost effective, they provide a means of help without the side effects of drugs such as stomach bleeding, liver damage, and mood changes. Chiropractic treatment can help when ever the nervous system is compromised. You shouldn’t just use pain as an indicator of when to help your child. Your child should be examined by an experienced chiropractor to be able to catch these problems before they are permanent.

    How long will it take?

Infants and children respond quickly with many conditions, days to weeks.

Adults can usually achieve pain relief within a few weeks of care. To correct dysfunction of a biomechanical issue, it could take months or longer during a phase where you would experience reduced pain, but recurrence of the symptoms at times. It all depends on how fit you are in to start with, and how much homework you are willing to commit.

    Sports Injuries sports injuries

Dr. Young will examine the area of complaint, and set you on an individual muscle rehabilitation exercise program to get you strong again, and back into the game. Sports injuries may also require adjustments to correct the spinal dysfunctions that may be contributing to your injury by prolonging recovery.

With experience, Dr Young will correct your spinal dysfunctions, and set you on an exercise program which you can complete at home , the gym or in the clinic, to hold the adjustments in place, as they are being made to retrain your body on how to properly hold itself. Supportive devices such as orthotics, pillows, back supports, heat, ice, and sports taping methods may be recommended to further hold your posture in place and prevent relapses.

    Is treatment painful?

We have many methods of easing the spinal subluxations or dysfunctions into correct position and function. The doctor of our office is very experienced and will do a complete history and examination, discuss with you and determine what will work best for you. The experienced doctor of our office is trained in several forms of techniques and along with state of the art modalities or tools, such as electro-therapy, laser and spinal decompression these services are made available to you where the specific nature of your case dictates.

    How much will it cost?

Chiropractic treatment is cost effective, and worth making it a priority for your valuable health. Many insurances cover chiropractic, acupuncture and orthotics. It is wise to find out your coverage and budget what you will require .

    Can Chiropractic help me ?

Yes it can. We can bring your body closer to homeostasis, keep you flexible, in order to keep your spine youthful and circulate the nutrients for healthy bones and hormones for healthy organ function. When your posture is corrected and your nervous system is functioning without interference you will automatically experience less pain and more abilities everywhere.

How does Chiropractic keep you young?

Chiropractic treatment can help keep you flexible. Adhesions and fusion in joints lead to less flexibility on the individual segmental vertebra (spinal bone) level. Less circulation of nutrients occurs with the lack of intersegmental flexibility and therefore there is less circulation of nutrients to bones and joints. Osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, increased nervous tension, and increased muscle tension occurs. Exercise can keep your spine limber in regions, but only chiropractic adjustments, nothing else has the ability to keep the stair stepping, slinky like, cascading natural motion in each segment (each vertebra) of your spine. We fight spinal degeneration on a continual basis.

The show must go on, and your body is amazing at compensating. One area will work harder if another area is not working. This means more wear and tear at joints that can’t be repaired with drugs or surgery. You may not even currently be aware that there is a problem, since your body is compensating for it. This is when the damage occurs silently, then when the system that is compensating can’t hold the load any longer, you will feel it full force and not know where or how it happened.

Are Chiropractic adjustments enough for me?

Sometimes problems have been there a long time with permanent ligament damage to our joints. With our holding elements damaged, we need assistance to hold our adjustments in place. We offer professional state of the art postural support in the forms of custom orthotic footwear devices, for your entire spine while you are standing, walking, or running, sports taping to assist muscle and joint rehab, and support pillows for your neck to reduce strain during sleep. Our office even provides postural decompression therapy to improve your posture and reduce compression on the spinal nerves ,and discs, and electro-therapy to reduce nerve irritation. A protocol of heat followed by ice may be set up for you to accentuate circulation and reduce inflammation.

Does back pain just go away on its own?
I had a back pain, but it just went away on its own with no physical treatment, is it gone for good?

Only a physical examination can really tell if an area is working.

When you no longer feel the pain, but the area was not rehabilitated to correct the spinal segments and strength, one of two scenarios has occurred:

    1. The body has stopped registering the pain, as you have learned to ignore the pain signal. This is usually the case when on physical examination, the pain can be reproduced and shows up again with physical stimulation to the area of question.

    2. Your body has recruited other areas, muscles, ligaments, and joints to help to do the job that the original area was intended to do. Since the original area is now injured and too weak to complete the task on its own. This recruitment is a type of compensatory self defense mechanism the body has to get the job done. Your brain is the main command center ( it is the boss) and it has told your body to complete the given task. The danger in recruitment is now the problem is spreading to cause wear and tear in other parts of your body. Also, the original site has no ability to heal because it is also being aggravated and strained.
